The Marshall Islands has made history by completing the world's first blockchain-based Universal Basic Income (UBI) program. Announced on December 16, 2025, the initiative leverages digital tokens to distribute dollar-denominated payments to citizens, who can receive, store, and send funds peer-to-peer via their smartphones. The program is powered by Crossmint Wallets and built on the stellar blockchain, ensuring transparency and price stability.

The UBI disbursement addresses the nation's unique logistical challenges, including its vast ocean territory and dispersed islands, which have historically hindered traditional financial infrastructure. By digitizing public welfare, the Marshall Islands bypasses correspondent banking limitations, offering a scalable model for other nations.

This milestone underscores the transformative potential of blockchain in public finance, combining sovereign debt instruments with decentralized technology to create resilient economic systems.
